Pediatric

The children and adolescents receiving prosthetic treatment at Synergy blow us away everyday! Their remarkable strength and unlimited potential drives our creativity to find prosthetic solutions throughout the developmental stages in a growing child’s life. The rehabilitation teams at the Glenrose Childrens Limb Difference Clinic and The Stollery Children’s Hospital are part of Synergy’s pediatric patient-centered continuum of care.

Lower Limb

Trans-tibial, or below knee, amputation is the most common limb loss affecting people in our society. Synergy interacts closely with the Outpatient Amputee Clinic at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in working to restore quality of life to those affected by trans-tibial amputation. Although this level of amputation is the most common, our treatment process varies to match the individual needs and lifestyle of each person.

Trans-femoral, or above knee, amputation requires a significant input of skill and expertise by a prosthetist to achieve a comfortable and functional prosthesis. Synergy staff place emphasis on honing skill to craft the best possible trans-femoral prostheses for our patients whether they are 8 years old or 80. Advanced technology is applied in all possible scenarios.

Upper Limb

Incorporating an arm prosthesis or hand prosthesis into a person’s daily life presents a unique set of challenges depending on the users age, lifestyle, and goals. The team at Synergy has a broad depth of experience with all upper limb prostheses ranging from the most advanced commercially available robotic hands to body powered hooks and adaptations.

Multiple limb loss, short amputations, and hip disarticulations are examples of the types of cases Synergy will invest in for hours, days, weeks, and months until the best possible outcomes are achieved.

Activity Specific Prothesis

Many of the patients at Synergy receive additional prostheses for athletics, swimming, or climbing. The high demands placed on these types of prostheses is a challenge embraced by our technician and prosthetists together. We work on your behalf to find funding sources for these projects.

Head shot of Zuzu

Zuzu

Chief Executive Officer of Happiness

Zuzu has been with Synergy since January 2022. Her previous experience includes being an adorable, fluffy puppy, wagging her entire back end when excited to see someone, and playing fetch non-stop with a squeaky ball. She loves people, especially children and works to ensure that appointments aren't boring, although she has been known to sleep on the job periodically. She has a great love for delivery people and can most often be found with her head in a trash can.

When not at work she enjoys long walks, chewing on recycling, barking, chewing on sticks, socks, and toys, and going for bike rides in her backpack.

Head shot of Duane

Duane Nelson CP(c)

Certified Prosthetist, Owner

People, science, art. Duane recalls in his childhood that he identified with equal interest towards creating things, understanding how those things worked, and most importantly that things are never more important than a person. There is a strong combination of skill and understanding that emerges each time Duane provides a prosthesis. Duane has more than a decade of prosthetic experience that includes time in Saskatchewan and Alberta as well as abroad in Bolivia and Burma. He is happy to call Edmonton home with his wife and two children.

Head shot of Chloe

Chloe Plecash MSc, CP(c)

Certified Prosthetist

Chloe never thought she'd find a career which combined her love of science, creative problem solving, working with her hands, and connecting with others…until being introduced to prosthetics. At BCIT she won the top Prosthetics and Orthotics academic achievement award each year. More recently she completed her Masters of Rehabilitation Science. Chloe has worked in Edmonton, Vancouver, and Prince George. She was the sole prosthetist at the PG clinic, working with a wide range of clients and devices from across Northern BC. Chloe collaborates with her clients to create prostheses which fit each person's unique limb, lifestyle, and personal style.

Outside of work Chloe can be found walking her own dog, or obsessing over other peoples' dogs.

Head shot of Brittany

Brittany Traverse

Prosthetic Technician RTP(c)

Brittany had an interest in creating and building projects from a young age and was introduced to the world of prosthetics through a high school classmate that competed in the Paralympics. This led to her completion of the George Brown College Prosthetic and Orthotic Technician program in Toronto, Ontario. During school she did two placements, one in Auckland with New Zealand Artificial Limb Services, and the other in Kelowna with Hagar Orthopaedic Clinic. After graduating, she came to Edmonton to complete her internship where she finished her registration in 2022.

When not at the office, she can be found at the local climbing gym or spending time in the Rockies.
